The "Penguin" space suit, also known as ADELI Suit
HistoryThe prototype of the therapeutic suit applied in the ADELI Medical Center was a breakthrough in space medicine - a space suit developed by Russian scientists in 1971. The reason for this invention was severe disorder in astronauts motor abilities after return from space back to Earth. The motor disorder appeared as a result of damaging effects of weightlessness and limited movement on the brain and the central nervous system of the astronaut. The application of the suit removed the infuence of damaging factors on the stato-kinetic body systems. The suit is still applied in space medicine. |

The duration of the first space flights was measured by hours, and it would stay as short if the problem of damaging effects of weightlessness and hypokinesis - such as an atrophy of muscular system, decalcination of bone tissue, etc. - could not be solved. It could still take a while until creation of enormous space stations with the artificial gravitation, as described in futurological novels, so the solution had to be found at a more more simple level. After a long-term research scientists and space medicine specialists have created a loading suit, making long-term space travelling possible. |
PatentsA suit patented with the World Intellectual Property Organisation as "A device for treatment of patients with disturbed posture and motor activity" has a principle of action, constructive and functional features similar to the "Penguin," though differs by field and character of application. Naturally, having direct relationship with the space suit "Penguin", the medical suit for rehabilitation of CP patients, designed on on the basis of the former, has received acknowledgements among specialists in space neurology. |
